Welcome to "If I Had A Search Engine"

This site is dedicated to search engine ideas, search engine critiques, and forward thinking. Originally this site was going to be a place for me to show some of my search engine ideas, a collection of thoughts about making a search engnine most effecient for the way I search. Then I thought of many ways to make things better for other folks, and many search engine thoughts just kept flowing. Now however, I hope this site will also showcase other people's ideas and become a collaborative space for people to help make search engines better, both for the masses and for individual search needs.

This site was going to be a blog, then I decided to try the bbpress forum setup, thinkning it would be a better way showcase many different people's ideas on search engine ideas, (the day I read about the various custom google search pages that were being created), but now I am thinkning that a collobarative blog space, where other people can register here and become an author show shows his or her views on search ideas will be the best way to go for now.

This site coulb become a regular radio show or even video podcast, depending upon how much interest and how things shape up in the search engine world.

blocking malware idea implemented in google

Posted in Uncategorized by SE Critic

Wow, this has been one of my biggest issues for sometime now, and something that I had thought that ought to be possible for big search engine companies - block the sites that have viruses, spyware and other malicious malware that aut install on your system. Well it appears that google has implemented this and they are blocking access to sites in the google search results that have these malware issues - nice! Hopefully the other search engines will get into this.

The details are sketchy right now, I look forward to more info about this.

PS my voice recorder is busted, so my posts have been slowed by technlogy issues - not to mention an upadte to dragon naturally spekaing made the dictation software unasble for some time- geeze, all these technlogies that are slowing me down in writings about making technlogy better and more effecient - kind of a funny irony this month.

The thoughts that started this site

Posted in ideas by SE Critic

A collection of search engine frustrations led me to creating htis site. I love the internet, and the wealth of information available, but finding the info people want, even using these multi billion dollar search engines, is difficult sometimes.

I am sure it is different for different people, and the needs of a professional webmaster will be differnt than the housewife looking for recipes, but there are some things that could be done better that will make search much better, and I would like to share some of my ideas. Below is a quick example of something similar to my thoughts, a few search operation available with a custom pageflakes set up.. but the search boxes are not auto-populated when I type a search in one box.. and there are not many of the available operations for narrowing the search, or expanding in various ways, that advanced search users can do, and the average users has not idea of the possibilities that are currently available. Both the advanced and basic search users would benefit from easier additions to the search operators.. click not adding pluses, and minuses, having to think of type words.. lets the engines suggest or let you type to add.. this kind of happens when I had used the google toobar in the post.. but it needs to be expanded on.

The initial concept was to showcase some of my ideas, but I know that I am not the only one who has good ideas, so I hope that others will not only share thier comments, but author a few posts as well, and we can show iff some of the unique search engine ideas that are out there.

So, the thoughts I was having about search… The main thing I think we need is multiple columns, collapsable perhaps, but several columns.. the standard search for a term and get results numbered 1 - 1 million seems pretty old fashioned to me. Let’s take the search for “Opera”.

If you type “Opera” into most search engines, you get s amix of results that cover things including the opera web growser (which is very very cool by the way), but what if you are looking for Opera music, or Opera singers.. Well you could see a wikipedia article and find you info that way (as of today wikipedia is on the fist page of search engine results in both Yahoo and google). But what if a search engine was able to display 3 (or more) columns, with results that narrowed. I was thinking about a first column of general search results, and a second column that would narrow the results to say, Opera the browser, and similar sites, then another column that would narrow the results to music, or singers. You get the idea right?

Well at the top or bottom of these results should be an ajax style option checker, such as add a keyword (from a populated list of defineing terms) to narrow the search more, or add a site search with a click… and similar expressions could be added witha click and showing some option, kind of what google does with the “more” link.

google more

You see, if I had my own million dollar search company ,I would make the search page a bit more like netvibes or pageflakes, but not so overwhelming for the average user.. there would of course be more search operations added witha click for advanced users.. doing things like taking the search term and running through various operators and narrow searches, like books, tagged, blogs, etc.. any one of these search result boxes could be expanded with a click, or modified with a “more” operation.

As of today, this is the search engine that I want.. perhaps I will get time to make some graphics to further illustrate my points, but I am not the world’s best graphics guy, but we’ll see.

Search engine ideas - yahoo thoughts on thanksgiving day

Posted in yahoo by SE Critic

On thanksgiving day a fellow webmaster and I were talking about yahoo and google, and it led to some ideas about yahoo coming out…

Recorded mp3 / podcast included.

[edit - update] Having an issue with uploading the mp3 podcast, apparently we are having an issue with a 2mb php upload issue, we’re going to follow the advice of this wordpress article and see if we can fix that for future posts. In the meantime, we are going to ftp the file and test and see if it is linked through wordpress to the file location, if it will still get any kind of podcast enclosure thingy it may need for proper itunes / rss reader support.] Direct link to podcast mp3.
This is the first post, and a little experimental at this point. I hope the podcast enclosure and mp3 work out, if you have any issues or ideas please comment and let me know!

Edit Update - I just browsed over to launch.yahoo.com and found that the annoying rock band flash ad thing that covered the user sign in is not currently there. I guess they could have taken it off anytime in the past few weeks, as it has been a while since I used thier service. - So good news! The flash thing is not there today, and perhaps it won’t return to blocking the user log in space again.
